Have you been looking for a wondrous, authentically rustic cottage? Here surrounded by streams, rolling mountains, and a pristine pond, nestles the JME Retreat, with all its originality and character. Get ready to become enchanted, and to make memories you’ve only dreamed of! This 80-year-old rustic cottage has been restored to retain its vintage beauty, but enhanced with modern luxuries for added comfort. The JME Retreat at The Cohutta Reserve is located on over 80 acres of unspoiled natural wonder in the North Georgia Mountains. This region is fondly referred to as “The Cohutta’s" by the locals, so you will have plenty of adventures waiting just outside the cottage. Not only do you have all this property to explore, but you have a very well maintained pond just a stone’s throw away from the cottage. The pond is naturally creek fed, and stocked with native Trout. Best of all, no fishing license is needed!
As you wind along the country side approaching the reserve access driveway, trees will become taller and thicker with houses few and fewer. You'll turn off the pavement at this point, to journey along the half mile gently sloping gravel drive to the cottage crossing one of the properties noisy creeks and then you'll pass a large serene meadow with young (and nearly once extinct) American Chestnut Saplings. Before the early 1900s, the American Chestnut was the predominant tree species in eastern forests and was widely known as a "Mighty Giant". More than 100 years after a blight forced it into extinction, scientists are resurrecting this once-great tree from seedlings and careful cultivation. JME Retreat is part of a family estate, who are happy to have these young but important trees growing on the reserve and take pride in the fact these saplings are being well cared for. American Chestnut Trees are truly a piece of American history and just one more interesting and unique feature to this preserve. The driveway ends in a fairy-tale like setting: the rustic cottage, a splashing creek flowing into the lovely pond, rolling hillsides, birds chirping, crisp mountain air, all with the Cohutta Wilderness Mountains as a back drop.
Step inside and go back in time to the early 1900’s… Inside you’ll find a 1 bedroom cottage with an open loft has two queen beds, a cozy living space around the original stone fireplace, a new tile shower and farmhouse-style kitchen. The entire cottage is open and has been stripped down to the bare studs, renovated with modern additions like electricity, plumbing, and insulation. The interior has been carefully recreated with the original lumber used and reclaimed barn wood as well as antiques, and vintage decorative items (many items showcased throughout cabin were originally tools/primitive devices dating back to original homesteaders) retain its original character. Even the oak flooring has original nails and boards to keep the vintage charm and retain features of the cottage itself. The main level has an open bedroom with a hand carved antique Queen Sized bed. This bed frame was brought over from Europe by the family after WW2 and also has matching hand carved antique vanity joining the bed in the open bedroom. Just past the open bedroom is the bathroom, which has a chocolate colored marble counter top and tile shower. Step back toward the living space for enjoying the original stone wood burning fireplace or the new flat screen just above the windows. This fireplace still has the original mortar which was mixed on site and the fireplace built by hand from stones collected on the property. The fireplace is surrounded with luxurious seating perfect for enjoying a warm fire or watching satellite television on the flat screen TV. The living space flows into kitchen & dining table area. The endearing kitchen has new beautiful white marble counter tops, stainless steel refrigerator, stainless steel 4-burner gas stove, microwave, and coffee maker. The farmhouse-style dining table seats four and offers a perfect spot to look out from the kitchen windows across the rolling hills behind the cottage. The small open loft is accessible by the original steps (These steps are reflective of the cottages time period it was originally built so are very steep) and has a new queen bed with plush bedding & pillows overlooking the living room and fireplace.
Get outside and fall in love with nature! The front porch of JME Retreat has a small dining table for meals with a view as well as rocking chairs to really put you in the mountain mood. The back porch has a small breakfast bar (originally this served as a vegetable/garden prep station long ago!) which has seating for two. The breakfast bar is perfect for sampling local wines, fruits, cheeses, etc... while discussing your next adventure or just reconnecting with that important person you’ve brought with you to this unique place. The gas grill platform and the fire pit is just a few steps away, with seating and string lights. The fire pit will really make you feel like you’ve stepped into a movie or a romantic novel with its glowing halo of white lights and roaring fire. Imagine sitting around the fire pit, millions of stars dotting the mountain sky as you enjoy nature’s beauty and the person sitting across the fire from you... This is a very special and rare place to find and enjoy!
The trout pond is a very short walk from the fire pit or the cottage itself and is stocked with Native trout. These fish are so friendly you’re likely to see several near the surface just when walking past the calm, cool water. Follow the steam into the hills if you’re feeling adventurous or just plan a picnic by the creek/ponds edge. JME Retreat at The Cohutta Reserve is a place to get away from it all and truly connect with nature, someone you love, or maybe just reconnect with yourself. Although updated with modern amenities such as WiFi, a flat screen TV, new appliances, a new tile shower, new luxurious bedding, gas grill, and a gas wall heater, this lovely and endearing cottage still has just as much charm as the day it was built over 70 years ago. We guarantee you won’t find a property like this anywhere else!
